NewsDesk – Moorlands residents urged to have their say on election day

April 11th, 2013

Moorlands residents are being urged to make sure they don’t miss out on their chance to vote in the Staffordshire County Council elections on May 2nd.

By-elections in the Leek North ward for Staffordshire Moorlands District Council and the Leek North ward of Leek Town Council are also taking place on the same day.

If you’ve moved house recently, or will soon be 18, and your name doesn’t appear on the electoral register then you won’t be able to vote.

Registering to vote is easy and only takes a few minutes by printing off a form from either www.staffsmoorlands.gov.uk/sm/elections or www.aboutmyvote.co.uk and filling it in.

Alternatively, residents can pick up a form from any of the council’s one-stop-shops at Leek, Biddulph and Cheadle or call Electoral Services on 01538 395500 to request one.

Applications must be received by Wednesday, April 17th, 2013 and should be sent to the Electoral Registration Officer, Moorlands House, Stockwell Street, Leek.

If you’re going to be away for the election, or are unable to vote at your local polling station, you can still have your say by applying to vote either by post or by proxy.

The closing date for postal vote applications is 5pm on April 17th and they should be sent to the Moorlands House address as above. Postal vote packs will be issued to all who have registered for this service around April 19th and they must be returned by the close of the poll on May 2nd.

If you want to vote by post we can send the pack to either your home address or another address of your choice but please bear in mind the length of time it will take to receive it and send it back.

Voting by proxy involves asking a relative, friend, or someone else you trust, to vote on your behalf at a polling station. You will need to provide a reason for choosing a proxy vote and, in some circumstances, your application will require a signature from a supporter. Proxy applications must be received by 5pm on Wednesday, April 24th.

Application forms for voting by post or proxy are available from the Electoral Registration Officer on 01538 395500.

Polling stations will be open from 7am to 10pm on election day.

For more information about registration and voting visit www.staffsmoorlands.gov.uk/sm/elections
