NewsDesk – Your help needed to keep Longton’s past alive

April 5th, 2013

You can help keep Longton’s history alive by sharing your memories with B-Arts, a local group who are working with students from Staffordshire University to create an online archive describing what the town was like in the past.

B-Arts will be in Longton market every Wednesday throughout April to tell you about the project and explain how you can volunteer to help create an interactive heritage trail around the town.

Councillor Ruth Rosenau, cabinet member for regeneration, planning and transportation, said: “This is an excellent opportunity to get involved in a really important historical project that will help to preserve memories of Longton in years gone by.

“I would urge anyone with an interest in local history as well as those who would like to gain valuable work experience or who would just like to meet new people, to pop down to the market and volunteer. It is also a great opportunity for people who have lived in the town for some time, and can reflect on how the area has changed, to share their stories of Longton’s past with younger generations.”

Restoration project will give Longton heritage appeal

January 5th, 2012

Central Hall Methodist Church

A historic church hall in Longton is going to be refurbished as part of a scheme to improve the town’s heritage appeal.

The Central Hall Methodist Church, in The Strand, will have its heritage features restored as part of a major project to renovate the town’s architectural heritage.

Work on the building is due to start on Monday, 16th January. The windows and canopies will be restored, the sandstone facade will be renovated and underused rooms will be brought back in to use.

The work is part of a series of projects to restore heritage buildings in Longton through the Longton Heritage Partnership. Work has already started on the Victorian Market hall where shop fronts have been refurbished.

Councillor Ruth Rosenau, Stoke-on-Trent City Council cabinet member for regeneration, said: “Longton has a strong architectural heritage and this project is helping to restore the exterior of some of the town’s most historical buildings. The Methodist Hall is well used by the community and has a long historic connection with the town. The work will repair the front stained glass windows and restore the intricate canopy designs which will bring the building back to its former glory.”
