Keele NewsDesk – Controversial lecture on politicians and the European Union

March 13th, 2012

Leading political researcher, Robert Ladrech, the Professor of European Politics at Keele University, will be giving  his inaugural lecture  “Political Parties and the European Project” on Tuesday, 20th March, 2012.

Speaking about the lecture, Professor Ladrech said mainstream political parties in Western Europe have supported membership of the European Union and initiatives to further European integration without  justifying their actions to the electorate. National politicians participate in European Union governance and implement its legislation. When European laws are unpopular, some blame the European Union by saying  ”Brussels made me do it.”

In his lecture, Professor Ladrech will be asking why mainstream political parties are unwilling to encourage informed debate on their support for the European Union and European integration.

The lecture starts at 6 pm and will take place in the university’s Westminster Theatre.

Admission is free. Tickets are not required.
