Moorlands NewsDesk – Volunteers need to look after nature reserves

July 7th, 2012

COUNTRYSIDE lovers are invited to explore two beauty spots on the outskirts of Cheadle on Wednesday, July 11th.

The invitation from Staffordshire Moorlands District Council is part of a drive to recruit a voluntary group willing to help care for Hales Hall Pool and Cecilly Brook local nature reserves.

Countryside officer Mark Preece wants prospective helpers to join him at 7pm, at the entrance to South Moorlands Leisure Centre in Allen Street, for a two-hour stroll to see wildlife on the reserves.

Cllr Mark Deaville, portfolio holder for leisure, sport, parks and countryside, said: “The aim is to set up a group to help monitor the reserves and their wildlife, conserve habitats, run small community events and access grants for site improvements. It is hoped that enthusiasts will volunteer for roles including chairperson, secretary, treasurer and warden.”

For more information on the walk, call Mark Preece on (01538) 395577 or e-mail mark.preece@staffsmoorlands.gov.uk.

Moorlands NewsDesk – £100,000 to improve local High Streets

April 4th, 2012

Staffordshire Moorlands District Council will receive £100,000 from the Government’s High Street Innovation Fund.

The district council is one of a hundred councils in the country to be given a share of the £10 million fund which is part of the Government’s ‘Porta-Plus’ response following recommendations made by the retail expert Mary Portas to help the nation’s high streets.

The High Street Innovation Fund supports councils in their efforts to improve the look of local high streets by encouraging new start-ups and bringing empty shops back into use.

Cllr Andrew Hart, Cabinet Member for Housing and Regeneration said:  “This is very welcome news and will help to support the work already achieved in the Moorlands to improve our town centres – in particular, the Masterplan for Cheadle and the Action Plan for Biddulph.

“We have been busy developing our very own enterprise workshop programme to support the local economy which is looking to help people wishing to start-up their very own business but who may be unsure as to how to go about it.

“This extra funding could not have come at a better time, helping to support the work we’ve already got planned but enabling us to do even more.”

Cheadle NewsDesk – Council’s offer to buy market rejected

February 27th, 2012

Staffordshire Moorlands District Council’s offer to buy Cheadle Market has been turned down by the site’s owner, Northern Markets.

The council based its offer on an independent valuation of the site’s worth. Northern Markets say the offer is too low and want 30% more than the authority is prepared to pay.

Cllr Andrew Hart, portfolio holder for regeneration, said: “We see the market as a potential asset and have solid investment plans but Northern Markets’ valuation is unrealistic as it doesn’t take proper account of the market’s well being in recent years.”

The council leased the market from Northern Markets six years ago and have been running it at a loss.

Cheadle NewsDesk – Council offers to buy the town’s market

February 8th, 2012

Staffordshire Moorlands District Council wants to buy Cheadle Market which it has rented for the past six years.

The council has offered to purchase the market from its owners, Northern Markets, when the lease expires at the end of February.

Cllr Andrew Hart, portfolio holder for regeneration, said: “We’ve made a realistic offer which represents good value for the taxpayer and gives Northern Markets a fair price while enabling us to invest in the market.”

Acquisition would allow the council to close the existing market and replace it with a new one in the town centre.
