Olympic coins go on sale

November 19th, 2011

The official UK coins to celebrate the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games have been designed by two students.

Architectural student Saiman Miah from Birmingham and graphic and media design graduate Pippa Sanderson from Malvern, Worcestershire, have created two £5 coins which will be permanent mementos of London 2012.

Their designs were selected following a Royal Mint competition for art and design students attending higher education colleges and universities across the UK.

The coins, which are UK legal tender, will go on sale this month and are expected to be collected by thousands of Games enthusiasts around the world.

The designer of the official Olympic coin, Saiman Miah, is currently studying for his Masters degree at the Birmingham School of Architecture.

Pippa Sanderson, who recently graduated with a First Class Honours Degree in Graphic and Media Design at Hereford College of Arts, designed the London 2012 Paralympic Coin.

Waterways Trust’s last meeting

November 19th, 2011

On 17 November, 2011, the Waterways Trust held its last annual meeting before merging with the Canal & River Trust next year.

At the meeting, project workers from Glasgow, Birmingham, Burnley and the National Waterways Museum described how they are helping communities across Britain to discover canals and start to value their environment and heritage.

Since it was founded in 1999, the Trust has raised over £15 million for canal and river projects.

The Trust’s annual Review of Key Activities (2010/11) describes the work being done by the charity and its partners. The digital document, available online at www.thewaterwaystrust.org.uk, uses new technology so it can be easily viewed on smartphones and android devices as well as standard PCs.
