Petition to keep the Royal Mail’s Kidsgrove Delivery Office open

October 6th, 2011

The Royal Mail’s proposal to close the Kidsgrove Delivery Office has shocked people living in Kidsgrove and South Cheshire. Joan Walley, the Labour MP for Stoke-on-Trent North, opposes the closure and has launched a petition against it. The Sentinel (6th October, 2011) reports her as saying: “This is a major issue for Kidsgrove.

“Quite apart from anything else, there has been no consultation with local businesses or householders.

“My fear is if the work is transferred to Knutton, the workforce will have further to travel to start their deliveries and it won’t be done on time.

“Royal Mail needs to understand that if it takes this investment away from the town, it is undermining Kidsgrove as a local commercial and residential centre.

“There has already been a deterioration of performance of postal deliveries across the ST7 area.

“We should be looking to improve services for residents and businesses, not cut them back.

“We have already seen the removal of the sorting office at Stoke to Wolverhampton and services at Crewe to Warrington.

“This region is becoming a hole when it comes to Royal Mail, rather than an investment hub, and it’s just not on.”

First World War Records to be digitalised

October 6th, 2011

The National Archives is going to digitise the WO 95 record series containing unit war diaries from the First World War. This series is used extensively by researchers visiting the reading rooms at Kew. Digitising the series and publishing it online means that the diaries will be more accessible. Due to their age and popularity, these records are extremely fragile and essential conservation work will be carried out while they are being digitised. The National Archives’ war diaries research guide explains the importance of these records to researchers.
